Day 10 of our 25 presidential elections in 25 days.
Voters headed to the polls on Tuesday, November 2, 1948 to elect a president. The nominees that year were: Thomas Dewey (Republican), Harry S. Truman (Democrat) and Strom Thurmond (States’ Rights Democratic Party). When the votes were all counted, Mr. Truman would receive 24,179,347 votes and 303 votes in the Electoral College, Mr. Dewey would receive 21,991,292 votes and 189 votes in the Electoral College and Mr. Thrumond would receive 1,175,930 votes and 39 votes in the Electoral College.
Here are the election results for Lackawanna County:
Thomas Dewey — 46,283
Harry S. Truman — 64,495
*Strom Thurmond was not on the ballot in Pennsylvania.

President Truman paid many visits to Scranton over the years, one of the visits took place on October 23, 1948. He spoke to large crowd on Courthouse Square.
